If you saw USA Today, you may have noticed that ex-UK athletics director C.M. Newton weighed in on the John Calipari controversy by taking up for the Kentucky coach.
Full disclosure: C.M.’s son, Martin, is Calipari’s Director of Basketball Operations.
Here’s the C.M. quote:
“I think Calipari is one of these guys who’s not unlike many, many others,” Newton said. “He’s very bright, and operates in the area of ‘I’m going to go to the edge of the rule but I’m not stepping over it.’ … Guys who are successful in intercollegiate athletics are in that grey area sometimes. … You’d like to think everybody operates within the spirit and intent of the rules, and you can shoot for that. But in the real world we’re now, where the dollars are driving it, you’re in a big business. That’s where we’ve evolved to.”

What a UK sheep…Baaahhh, Baaahh
Wow. I mean really, wow. Newton all but says “yes he is cheating and I don’t mind.” Well we all knew you didn’t mind CM but it’s good to hear it anyway.
“You’d like to think everybody operates within the spirit and intent of the rules, and you can shoot for that. But…”
I mean wow.
Is that really “taking up for” him? Wow.
Great Words from a man which received illegal retirement monies and condos in the Caribbean and President Lee Todd put the clamp down on this one. Great Words from a man who saw no evil, heard no evil and spoke no evil during the Rupp Point Shaving Scandal even though his roommates and best friends were neck deep in the scandal. He pled the fifth before it was fashionable.
Well, I for one, am glad he is supportive of Coach Cal. Get in the real world, guys!
GO BIG BLUE!!!
