Oscar Combs’ rather unique UK hat

Ok, I’ve been to UK football media day. And I promise that I tweeted my head off, but apparently because of the DOS attack yesterday on the Twitter service, many of the accounts are not able to update by SMS, or text message. I apparently have one of those accounts. When it is fixed, hopefully all my backlogged tweets will show up. Hopefully. Just to prove I did it.

Oh yeah, and I had lunch.

And I will post my impressions of Media Day before I write my print column.

But first, I had to show you the hat Oscar Combs wore to Media Day.

The former Cats Pause owner and publisher bought it from a man named Rufus King in 1976, and Oscar claims he hasn’t had it out of the hat box much since. But he did break it out yesterday. Oscar said that King put a half-page advertisement in the Cats Pause in ’76, selling the hats at $125 a pop. He quickly received 150 orders.

Yes, Oscar is almost correct. I did begin making the Stetson 5x Pure White Rancher hats which I bought from Stetson Hat Company in 1976, and I sold about $45,000 worth of them from ads in The Cats Pause or through cards that I carried in my pocket at the home and away games. I went to 81 straight games both home and away during those late 70′s and early 80′s games. I still have my hat which I will wear at the Tennessee game in some years. Tell Oscar he look very good in that fine hat.
