ESPN: SAT invalidated another Memphis recruit’s score

The SAT that Robert Dozier took while orally committed to Memphis was later invalidated, ESPN’s Mark Schlabach is reporting.

Dozier later reneged on his Memphis commitment and signed with Georgia, which red-flagged Dozier’s test scores and denied admission.

After spending a year at prep school with other Memphis signees, Dozier ended up going to Memphis. He helped the Tigers reach the 2008 Final Four, the same Final Four that now could be vacated because of Derrick Rose’s invalidated SAT score.

Reports Schlabach:

According to Dozier’s academic records, which were obtained by ESPN.com through Georgia open records laws, he took the SAT for the first time on Dec. 6, 2003, about five months after he verbally committed to play for the Tigers. Dozier scored a 1,260 of a possible 1,600 (the highest score at the time) on the test, according to the records.

Dozier later reneged on his commitment to Memphis, and signed a national letter of intent with Georgia in March 2004. But Georgia admission officials were immediately alarmed by Dozier’s high SAT score, which they claimed didn’t correlate with his below-average academic performance at Lithonia (Ga.) High School or his previous scores on the PSAT, a preparatory exam for the SAT.

In its report to UGA president Michael Adams, the school’s faculty admissions review committee, which evaluates the admission applications of prospective student-athletes, recommended a “strong deny” in Dozier’s case.

Dozier did a retake of the test and scored 720 – 540 points lower than his earlier score, reports Schlabach.

Note: It should be noted that after Dozier was denied admission at Georgia, he spent a year at the prep school and was cleared by the NCAA Clearing House before being admitted at Memphis.

Jodie Meeks to work out for Sixers on Friday

Jodie Meeks

Jodie Meeks

Update: Larry Vaught of the Danville Advocate-Messenger writes that Meeks “seems content” to stay in the NBA draft.

With scuttlebutt claiming that his stock is rising, UK guard Jodie Meeks is one of five players working out for the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Meeks will join Ty Lawson, Toney Douglas, Stefon Jackson and Terrence Williams, formerly of the Louisville Cardinals.

Meeks was considered to be a mid- to late-second round pick. But Fox Sports’ Jeff Goodman put the stellar perimeter shooter in the No. 25 slot of his NBA mock draft on Wednesday.

Jodie has until 5 p.m. Monday, June 15 to pull his name out of the draft.

Note: Alert reader points out that Goodman’s mock draft is who he thinks should be taken, not who will be taken.

Florida football’s arrest record too long to ignore

The media is starting to pick up on the not-so-fun fact that Florida football has kept Sunshine State police sires on alert with 24 arrests in the four years since Urban Meyer became head coach.

The latest embarrassing incident involved starting corner back Janoris Jenkins being tasered when police were trying to break up a fight in downtown Gainesville.

Now CBS Sportsline’s Gregg Doyel, a Florida alum, is not too happy with the law-breaking at his alma mater.

An excerpt:

Because this isn’t funny. This is infuriating, bordering on insanity. This is a football program that has had 24 players arrested — that’s an entire recruiting class — in Urban Meyer’s four years as coach. This week cornerback Janoris Jenkins became No. 24 with a flourish, getting Tasered and then showing enormous heart and toughness and criminality by rising from the Taser’s electric current and running away from cops.

This has to stop. And it has to stop now. Florida has won two national championships in four years under Meyer, but that’s not enough to justify 24 arrests in those same four years. Four titles in four years wouldn’t justify 24 arrests. Five titles in four years wouldn’t do it. It can’t be done. There is no justifying something like this.

Franklin Crittenden at Bleacher Report wants to know if Florida is the new Thug U?

Deadspin says not even tasers can stop the Gators.

Jay Bilas defends Calipari

Personally, being a poor journalist, I don’t have an ESPN Insiders subscription, but the folks at Kentucky Sports Radio do — that lawyering must pay well — and have printed excerpts from Jay Bilas’ defense of John Calipari.

Here’s one excerpt from Bilas’ piece:

So far, the biggest target in this saga has been Calipari. Because we have this ridiculous notion that the head coach is responsible for everything that goes on in his program, Calipari is taking the blame even though his name is not even mentioned in the Notice of Allegations. Remember, the Notice mentioned the name of a representative of Memphis’ athletic interests over a single phone call. If the NCAA had anything on Calipari, it would have unloaded it in the Notice. It does not.
