Tuesday’s Radio Roundup (and plug)

What I’ve heard from the local radio call-in shows:

  • WVLK-590: I’ll be on with Larry Glover at 7:05 p.m. I’m going to take a wild guess and say the Calipari/Rose/NCAA/one-and-done/SAT debates will continue.
  • WLAP-630: Dick Gabriel will have football coach-in-waiting Joker Phillips as his guest, starting at 6:05. Maybe Dick can get the bottom of Joker’s broken hand.

Tony Franklin says what he thinks — again

Good story over the weekend by Josh Moon of the Montgomery Advertiser, who visited former Auburn offensive coordinator (and former Kentucky offensive coordinator) Tony Franklin, and turned on the tape recorder.

Tony is now offensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee. And Tony doesn’t hold back.

A highlight:

“I don’t have to worry about all the crap you face in the SEC with its ridiculous, nit-picky rules and regulations on everything you do. I’m a guy who likes to walk down the street and not have to worry all the time about people watching me, waiting on me to screw up. I have that here.”

Tony on Auburn:

“It was the most unusual place I’ve ever been,” Franklin said of the Auburn program. “No one liked anybody else. There was this deep distrust of everybody. The coaches didn’t trust the administration, the administration didn’t trust each other or the coaches. It was very strange and very unnerving. You would walk down the halls and there would be tension you could just feel. No one would speak to you or even look at you. The coaches were all paranoid and didn’t trust anyone in the administration. They all felt like the administration was out to get them and they stressed out over everything that happened. “

There’s plenty more if you click on the link above.

If only Tony would say what he really thought.

Billy Clyde Gillispie is back in Texas

Andy Katz of ESPN tracked down Billy Clyde Gillispie back in his hometown of Graford, Texas. The former Kentucky coach says he’s “not sure what to do with the down time.”

The ex-coach tells Katz he hasn’t kept up much with Kentucky and John Calipari:

“I’m the least informed of anyone,” Gillispie said of knowing what was happening at Kentucky. “I don’t have a computer right now, and basically just live with my cell phone. I don’t watch a lot of TV news. If I would, I would have been paying attention.”

When reminded of the recruiting success so far, Gillispie said: “I love Lexington. It’s a neat place, and Kentucky is a fantastic place to live. I’m happy for those guys. I hope they can get every single person they can, and they will, in my opinion.”

Gillispie said Calipari is “the perfect fit. He’s a great recruiter and a great coach. I think it’s awesome, and I’m pulling for them.”

Oh yeah, sure he is. I won’t the spoil the rest for you. But his compliments of Jodie Meeks belie what most think really went on between the two the second half of the season.

Also, if you have a subscription to Kentucky Sports Report, Mike Pratt tells Larry Vaught he would not have returned to the radio team if Gillispie had been retained as coach.

Parrish: Rose cheated, but Memphis won’t get whacked

Gary Parrish of CBS Sportsline says that not a single person he has talked to believes that Derrick Rose took the SAT in question. And Parrish covered Memphis basketball for four years for the Memphis Commercial Appeal. He has good sources in and around the program. He thinks that Memphis now thinks that Rose did not take the questioned SAT.

But, Parrish doesn’t believe that Memphis will, or should be penalized for that.

Excerpt:

When the NCAA told Memphis not to play Angel Garcia, Memphis didn’t play Angel Garcia. When the NCAA told Memphis not to play Matt Simpkins, Memphis didn’t play Matt Simpkins. But then the NCAA came back and told Memphis it could play Matt Simpkins, so Memphis played Matt Simpkins. And this is the way it works. Schools provide standardized test scores and transcripts and anything else the NCAA wants, then the NCAA rules on the eligibility of every player. If the NCAA rules a player ineligible, that player doesn’t play. But it seems to me that when the NCAA tells a school that a player is qualified academically and free to play, a school should not be at risk after the fact, even if the NCAA later learns that an SAT is fraudulent (provided the NCAA doesn’t tie the school to the allegation).

On this charge, the NCAA isn’t accusing Memphis of any wrongdoing.

It’s simply stating that it no longer believes Rose took the questionable SAT.

Again, I don’t doubt that the NCAA is correct in its allegation, but to penalize Memphis for only doing what it was told it could do — which is play Rose — seems like a bad precedent.

Parrish does think that Memphis will get slapped over Reggie Rose’s travel bill, but only to the extent that the school will have to set up a better way of keeping track of who travels with the team, and how to handle the billing process.
