Henry Abbott’s TrueHoop blog has an interesting take on Derrick Rose’s brother, Reggie, who is reported to be the person that the NCAA is alleging received free arrangements on some Memphis basketball road trips.
An excerpt:
In basketball circles, while Derrick was at Memphis, Reggie was a mystery. He split time between Memphis and Chicago. He jetted around. But he didn’t have any obvious means of support.
Dan Wolken of the Memphis Commercial Appeal asked Reggie Rose about it at the time. This is how he responded:
“I’ve got an AAU foundation out of Chicago through Nike, and I’m a director, and I work with inner-city youth in Chicago,” he said. “I’m employed by Nike through AAU basketball. Then I’ve got a nonprofit organization that helps out kids from the Englewood community.”
Wait, did Reggie Rose misunderstand that question? He was asked how he makes money, not how he gives it away. Aren’t non-profits for giving goods and services away?
I know some people who work in the non-profit world. Money is tight all around! It’s something people tend to do as a sinkhole of money — not as a source. Reggie Rose tells us he’s integral to not one, but two, non-profits.

“I’m employed by Nike through AAU basketball…” What part of this statement means that Reggie Rose is/was not being paid?
So he is director of a non-profit organization and Abbott automatically assumes he is an unpaid volunteer?
This is a stupid non-story based on the facts presented in the story itself.
Many of these bloggers have no idea what they are talking about. TrueHoops should stick to talking about basketball and not muse about the non-profit world. As a former employee of a non-profit organization, I can assure you that many people who work for them make a living wage. Just because something is called a non-profit does not mean that some folks somewhere aren’t making a profit. Millions of people work for charities and get paid for doing so.
Talk about something you know something about, TrueHoops!
I’m not saying D. Rose’s brother isn’t shady, but those are really ignorant comments by Abbott. Plenty of folks earn decent salaries working for non-profits, which can include a wide variety of institutions. Hell, my kid’s daycare is a non-profit organization. Just because somebody works for a non-profit doesn’t mean they are a volunteer. Non-profits pay salaries and send employees on work-related trips just like businesses. There just aren’t any owners or shareholders that make money from them.
He said, “I’ve got an AAU foundation out of Chicago through Nike, and I’m a director, and I work with inner-city youth in Chicago,” he said. “I’m employed by Nike through AAU basketball. THEN I’ve got a nonprofit organization that helps out kids from the Englewood community.”
Im employed by Nike through AAU basketball – where he gets paid
THEN Ive got a nonprofit organization that helps out kids from the Englewood community. – Non Profit
Two different sentences.
Don’t be so damn stupid. Connect the dots people.
Reggie gets paid buy Nike through an AAU team and a non-profit orgainization. Both legitmate businesses for Nike and a tax deduction I might add. This gets set up by WWW. WWW does this for Cal and Nike. WWW gets Derrick a Nike contract just before he turns pro. WWW gets a cut from Nike. Nike is happy, Cal’s happy, Reggie is happy, Derick is happy, WWW is happy, and the city of Memphis is happy.
Then when it all comes out…… deny everything.
It is always the simple plans that work best.
I work in the healthcare industry and there are many not-for-profit and/or non-profit organizations that pay big salaries to their employees. However, I do believe that the AAU is getting too big and creating street agents. More regulation is needed for the AAU. High School sports are shrinking as the AAU is growing. I am beginning to see some AAU televised. More exposure for the athletes which can be both positive and negative. Negative in that more scum know who they are and try to leach on to them for future gain. Reform is needed for the NCAA and NBA. Let the talented Kids go to NBA out of college and those that sign with a University must stay a minimum of 2 to 3 years before they can declare for the NBA.
Mr. Abbott’s comments are a shining example of why blogs have such a negative connotation among the general public:
He draws a faulty conclusion from a crystal clear declaration — “I’m employed by Nike through AAU basketball.”
He makes an uninformed conclusion from the statement — “Then I’ve got a non-profit organization …”
The folks above me have thoroughly eviscerated the unfortunate Mr. Abbott, so I won’t “pile on.” I do ask one thing of the author, though — Find another hobby/job, because you stink. Or at minimum, cease from giving an opinion on anything other than the latest “Hannah Montana” movie.
Non-Profit is simply the “in way” of saying a “Not for Profit Business or Corporation.” A lot of people assume non-profit means no money; it really is a definition of the intent of the organization. This would be an organization that is defined as a 501 C 3 Not-for-Profit corporation with the intent to “promote amatuer sports competition.” Simple stuff. Abbott: You should stick to writing and not financial consulting. Directors of non-profits can make more than a living wage; they can easily make six figures.
He draws a faulty conclusion from a crystal clear declaration — “I’m employed by Nike through AAU basketball.”
