John Calipari’s accidental Twitter trouble

If you are among the 80,000-plus following John Calipari’s Twitter account you may be caught up in the new Kentucky coach’s first problem with the new form of communciation.

Earlier today, Calipari sent out a tweet that read:

Can u resend me the transfer release in an email?

That was followed by:

Sorry, that wasn’t meant for you guys. More on that later.

Calipari is actually at UMass, attending his daughter’s graduation. He later sent out three explanations:

Pt. 1: A brief explntn on an inadvertent tweet from 2day: While all my tweets are my own, orig. thghts, my super SID edits them b4 posting.

Pt.2 We were working on a forthcoming release about some stud-athletes and DeWayne mistakenly sent a txt meant for me, to the twitter acct

Pt. 3 Thank u all for understanding and I promise 2 keep tweeting. As in evrythg, there’s a learning curve in these new ways 2 communicate!

Calipari’s “super SID” is DeWayne Peevy, UK’s assistant athletics director for communications. He is the DeWayne that Calipari threw under the bus (kidding) for “mistakenly sent a txt mean for me, to the twitter acct.”

The “forthcoming release” no doubt has to do with the current UK basketball players who will not be on the roster next year. Jerry Tipton has already reported that A.J. Stewart has been told there will not be a scholarship for him next season, and the junior-to-be will be transferring. ESPN reported that Calipari talked to three players this week that would not have spots on next year’s roster.

Tennessee had to report a secondary violation to the NCAA when a football assistant used head coach Lane Kiffin’s account for a tweet saying how excited the Vols were about the commitment of a prospect. The player has not yet signed, thus you are not supposed to comment on an unsigned prospect by name. In any form.

Guess the moral of the story is: Be careful what you tweet.

Just glad that it was something minor like this, and not something more serious. And I think he did the right thing by addressing it instead of just ignoring it.
