E-mailbag: Flop at Florida

That 63-5 loss at Florida brought quite a few e-mail missives to the in-box.

Some excerpts:

Finally Brooks takes the blame!

Another great article. It blows my mind that 8 games into the season, our special teams still don’t know blocking assignments. How many kicks have been blocked so far this year? What happened Saturday was an embarrassment to the players, coaches and school. That showed me this team is winning through smoke and mirrors. No offense. No blocking. No playmakers. Too bad.

The most scary stat from the UK-Florida. game was not the score, but the Florida players responsible for the score. A review of the Florida depth chart in Saturday’s Herald shows no seniors on Florida’s first or second string defense and only four seniors on the first string offense.

I’ll be quick but I could go on and on, instead I will just say this was one of the worst performances I’ve ever witnessed from a major college football team. Abysmal is kind………..I was just happy that we didn’t get a kickoff or two blocked.

I guess we should apologize for the negativity. The team coach Brooks has given us is entertaining, comical even. There are probably not that many teams who could lose as badly to Florida. Oh well, give Brooks an contract extension because Joker Philips future doesn’t look too good, either. Even the defense was offensive and the offense doesn’t exist — yet, but Kentucky hearts coninue to hope through the frustration. Barnyard forever.

Okay today was bad. Real Bad. But being the UK fans that we are I think we have to find a silver lining and keep the faith. To do that all we have to do is look back at 2006.

During that season we went down to Baton Rouge, LA severely injured and lost to LSU 49-0. At the time we were down but just like today we had a ton of injuries and some of our most important players didn’t play. That team just like this one had two options… Mail in the season and loss out or turn it around and win some big games. That season we went on to win 4 out of our last 5 and should have beaten UT to win all 5, stupid delay of game penalty. The next game following the LSU debacle the Cats rebounded in Starkville to win 34-31. Just two games later that season UGA came into Commonwealth Stadium just like this year and the Cats came out victorious 24-20. That season the Cats won 7 games and went to a bowl game. That season the Cats rebounded after a horrible road loss and saved their season and gave UK fans everywhere a chance to BELIEVE!!!

A lot of UK fans including myself point to the UK vs UGA game in 2006 as the beginning of the turnaround for our Cats. The more I think about it I believe it was the LSU game. That team had two options be the Kentucky team we had always known or change things and give us the new Cats. The back to back Music City Bowl winning Cats!

This year will be no different. Today was bad, really bad but if we go down to Starkville and get a win all will be forgotten. We will have gotten bowl eligible for the third straight year and will have the confidence we need to beat Georgia just like in 2006.

The Cats will rebound. We will win in Starkville, play UGA tough, beat Vandy, and finally end the streak against UT to get Fat Phil fired.

Today was bad but as we look back at the game this week just remember 2006.

Go Cats!

I have been a loyal UK football supporter since the mid 70’s and even sat till the end of the Arkansas game. I get mad watching so-called UK fans leave early and half way thru the season walking by all the empty parking spaces. I have a question about the South Carolina coach ( without mentioning any name). Why do all the writers and TV people refer to him as the ole ball coach? No one in my circle seems to know why and I get tried of hearing it.

Well, Wally, the phrase goes back to Steve Spurrier’s fondness for calling himself “the ol’ ball coach,” such as when he says, “I guess the ol’ ball coach needs to come up with some better plays.” I can understand why you get tired of hearing it.

Thanks for the e-mail.
