Liveblog: UK-Florida first half

From press box, under overcast skies, at The Swamp:

  • Halftime: Florida 42-3
  • Gators drive 80 yards in 10 plays with Tebow scoring from three yards out to make it 42-3 with 26 seconds left before halftime. Fifty-five of those yards came on the ground. Just one pass thrown.
  • As I feared, UK defense having trouble with Florida’s little, swift backs. Gator at Uk 16 with 1:39 left in half.
  • Cobb has 21 yards on four carries. One was a sack.
  • Cobb directs a 14-play, 76-yard drive that ends with Lones Seiber kicking a 27-yard field goal to get UK on board. Florida lead now 35-3 with 5:03 left. Not going to do much on scoreboard, but score did at least give Cats sense of accomplishment. Cobb has looked very good at quarterback, both running and throwing. He’s 6-of-10 for 61 yards through the air at this point.
  • Cobb has team on move. Will this be remembered as day UK got drilled but found its quarterback?
  • Cobb has hit five of his first seven passes for 53 yards.
  • Cobb much more effective at quarterback than Hartline. Hits Adams for 16-yard gain, then 14-yard gain to Conner.
  • UK was outgained 126-46 in the first quarter, by the way.
  • In that 2006 game that UK lost 49-0 at LSU, Kentucky trailed 28-0 at half.
  • Florida fans may leave early for an entirely different reason than UK fans did last week. Demps takes short pass and outruns Cats to end zone for 61-yard touchdown and Florida 35-0 lead with 11:26 left in half.
  • Embarrassing. Seiber’s 32-yard field goal is blocked. That’s the third blocked kick of the game. Two punts and a field goal.

  • Kentucky picks up its first first down of the game on final play of first quarter, but Florida leads 28-0.
  • Cobb now running second series at quarterback.
  • Finally, a positive. Lindley intercepts pass. It’s his fourth of the year.
  • You don’t see Trevard Lindley get beaten very often. He does here. Percy Harvin gets a step. Tebow finds him for 33-yard touchdown. Florida leads 28-0 with 3:15 left. Most points UK has given up in a game this year, and we’re not out of the first quarter.
  • Gators go 61 yards in four plays and make it look (too) easy. Percy Harvin breezes in from 16 yards out for the touchdown and Florida leads 21-0 with 6:44 left in the quarter. I was here for the 73-7 Florida win back in the Curry years. This sort of has that feel.
  • Hooray — Masthay gets his third punt off. First without a block.
  • Another four-second scoring drive. Gators take over at 1-yard line after block. Brandon James scores. Florida 14-0 with 9:22 left in first quarter. By the way, Steve Ortmayer coaches UK’s special teams. If you didn’t already know that. UK has now had four kicks blocked this year.
  • Another blocked punt by Gators. Two-for-two. Unbelievable.
  • That was Florida’s third blocked kick this season.
  • To beat the No. 5 team in the country, you can’t get kicks blocked. Cats get their third kick blocked this year; first punt of the year. Green came right up middle to block Masthay’s punt after a three-and-out by offense. Tebow runs three yards for score and Florida 7-0 lead with 11:01 left in first quarter. Sorry, but blocked kicks can’t happen. And it’s been a problem all year. That goes right back on the coaches.
  • Florida goes six plays and punt on first drive.
  • McClinton is in there for the Cats.
  • Noticing that McClinton wasn’t starting for UK, Florida went deep on first play. But bad throw was nearly picked off and fell incomplete.
  • Thunderstruck was the pre-kickoff music.
  • Official forecast says 30 percent chance of rain.

It looked like two players stolled out there a little late for formation on our blocked punt. Just an indication to me that we were not mentally ready prior to the snap.

joker phillips is probably the worst play caller in history. spread it out. and go for it on fourth downs because our punt teams cant even shank it

Right up the gut again on the second block. Geez.

C’mon guys. This thing ain’t over. Remember last week? It wasn’t over! We won! Hey, was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Now who’s with me?

We should just forfeit the Florida game. If you forfeit, I believe it counts as a 1-0 loss. That would keep our PPG average down. I don’t know that not showing up to play a game would be as embarassing as showing up for the game and playing like we sent high school players to play the game.

I would run the ball up the middle and at least kill :40 per play.

You’ve already lost the game. At this rate, the Final will be 112-0.

Our worst loss in school history is 82-0 back in 1905…this one could be worse.

Wow! 28-0 with 3:15 left in the first quarter. I wonder if Coach Brooks can understand why there is lingering negativity associated with UK football. Back-to-back 8-5 seasons with bowl victories can be pushed aside when you look at the fact that our 21 (soon to be 22) game losing streak against Florida is the second longest losing streak in the country. It is topped only by our 23 game losing streak to Tennessee.

Papaw obviously didn’t take his Geritol today.

  9. 9 Warren T. October 25, 2008 at 1:05 pm

Our first serious gain (seven yards) on first down today is negated by an illegal shift. Nice.

We didn’t come mentally prepared today at all.

FG Attempt! Are you kidding me. Does anyone else remember a team having there kicks blocked in a little over a quarter?

  11. 11 Warren T. October 25, 2008 at 1:13 pm

I thought Seiber only came out there try point after attempts. Seiber sucks…so does everything else out of Knoxville.

  12. 12 Tom Seaver October 25, 2008 at 1:14 pm

And I was hoping we would only give up 35 for the game. Good to know the Lizards covered the spread in the first quarter.

  13. 13 Glenn October 25, 2008 at 1:23 pm

It’s obvious the refs are trying to keep Florida in this game. Florida was OBVIOUSLY offside on one of those kickoffs! :-)

  14. 14 Dan October 25, 2008 at 1:26 pm

    Holy Crap. We suck.

  15. 15 Warren T. October 25, 2008 at 1:26 pm

    Two things.

Firstly, any loss today had the built-in excuse of numerous injuries…any loss EXCEPT THIS ONE and its whopping margin thanks to the inexplicable special teams breakdowns. That talk will be drowned out by the highlight packages aired across the nation of block after block after block.

Secondly, out the window goes our national top-flight average for points allowed that we could hang our hat on for the first seven games.

  16. 16 Warren T. October 25, 2008 at 1:29 pm

Better UK freshman performance at QB in a Gainesville debacle…Randall Cobb already or Tim Couch.

  17. 17 Mville Madman October 25, 2008 at 1:34 pm

Cobb has looked better than Couch did in that 65-0 game.

  18. 18 gjg October 25, 2008 at 1:35 pm

Is Tydlacka hurt or in the dog house? Or we saving him for the Miss. St. game? I can’t think of any other reason Seiber would be kicking field goals.

  19. 19 Warren T. October 25, 2008 at 1:40 pm

Can somebody call Dr. Lou and see what kind of half-time speech Holtz would recommend in this situation?

  20. 20 Warren T. October 25, 2008 at 1:45 pm

42-3 with 0:26 to go before half. Can we apply the unsportsmanlike penalty on the second half kick-off rather than this one? I’m just sayin’.

  21. 21 Warren T. October 25, 2008 at 1:46 pm

I agree with you there Madman.

  22. 22 Stan October 25, 2008 at 1:47 pm

If and that’s a big “if” UK ever gets up on any SEC team and doesn’t run the score … time to run the coach out on a rail.

If this get’s much worse & i suspect it will, I expect and apology for this travesty

Put Hartline at receiver. Cobb has much better rhythym with the offense.

  23. 23 Mville Madman October 25, 2008 at 2:11 pm

How bad will this end up?
    Worse than 73-7???

  24. 24 gjg October 25, 2008 at 2:13 pm

wow. I was hoping Cobb would start the second half at QB, but he didn’t. Now at 49-3, let’s see if Cobb goes the rest of the way at QB…

  25. 25 Stan October 25, 2008 at 2:13 pm

    AND the Gators score again!!!

Let Hartline ride the pine. If nothing else, it’s time to get Cob a ton of experience.
