Liveblog: UK-South Carolina second half

From Commonwealth Stadium:

  • Final: South Carolina 24, Kentucky 17
  • 4Q-SC up 24-17 with 1:13 left: Culliver picks off Hartline on a fourth-down pass. That should do it.
  • Succop misses yet another field goal, and UK is still in it with 2:04 to go.
  • 4Q-SC 24-17 with 6:08 left: UK goes three-and-out again. Now 1-of-14 on third down.
  • 4Q-SC up 24-17 with 7:08 left: Garcia has been the difference. He hits Barnes with 38-yard completion to the UK 7. Then Spurrier tricks Kentucky, lining up a lineman as part of a 4-wide receiver set. That leaves tight end wide open for quick TD pass. The Ol’ Ball Coach still has it. Kentucky has to find some offense.
  • Carolina moving with 7:40 left at UK 45. Garcia is 7-of-11 for 101 yards passing.
  • Cats defense had to take second timeout. This one with 8:57 left.
  • 4Q-Tied at 17 with 9:40 left: Cats go 3-and-out. Then Masthay gets off just a 37-yard punt. Munneryln’s eight-yard return gives USC the ball at own 42.
  • 4Q-Tied 17-17 at 11:58: Succop now 1-of-4 as he makes 43-yarder to tie matters. Garcia has made a big difference for Gamecocks. He’s completed six of nine passes for 84 yards. Also made some good runs. But he hasn’t gotten visitors into the end zone. UK needs a good drive here.
  • USC has outgained UK 209-206 through three quarters.
  • Kentucky has to waste a timeout with 14:54 left because of wrong defensive formation. Rich Brooks not happy.
  • End of third quarter: UK 17-14
  • 3Q-UK 17-14 at 2:31: Succup misses his third field goal, this one from 40 yards. Garcia looked very good in drive.
  • Garcia now quarterbacking for South Carolina.
  • Hartline is 19 of 30 for 142 yards. Locke has 53 yards rushing on 16 carries.
  • 2Q-UK 17-14 at 6:46: This time Tydlacka misses, from 45 yards. UK made a nice mini-drive, but march stalled. Kentucky clinging to the 3-point lead.
  • 2Q-UK 17-14 at 10:34: Carolina gets just one yard on possession and punts. Cobb is returning punts with Lyons and Ford both out with injuries. Cobb’s 10-yard return gives UK ball at USC 48-yard line. A score here would look awfully good.
  • Dicky Lyons is out for the game with a hyperextended knee.
  • 3Q-UK 17-14 at 13:16: Succup misses his second 50-yard field goal attempt after UK on-sides attempt to start second half backfires.

The offensive is going to have to get creative or the O line is going to have to find some nasty to open up a running game..

No way Spurrier doesn’t make a change at QB. Their starter is terrible today.

  3. 3 Dave October 11, 2008 at 2:26 pm

Cobb is the real deal. Turned a short pass into a first down with some great moves.

  4. 4 Rob October 11, 2008 at 2:27 pm

Lanxter is now in. Hope he keeps his head about him and makes some plays.

This defense is going to have to come up even bigger right here…. Spurrier will pull a trick play here soon hope we are ready for it….

There’s that QB change by Darth Visor.

We’ve been the beneficiary of some off-target field goal kickers the last two games.

  8. 8 Dave October 11, 2008 at 2:40 pm

    1-12 on third downs.

  9. 9 Rob October 11, 2008 at 2:40 pm

I know we have no depth at WR, but why do we continue to throw to Adams? He can’t catch the ball, and does nothing with it if he does. (I know; lack of options)

We are in a field position game now. That 54-yard, fair caught punt was huge.

Another first down USC. The defense is outstanding, but the offense hasn’t been able to win this game, yet. I have faith though.

Against the Panthers tomorrow, Tampa Bay can only hope Jeff Garcia is as accurate as USC’s Steve Garcia has been today.

    WE Believe

  14. 14 Dave October 11, 2008 at 2:59 pm

    1-13.

  15. 15 Dave October 11, 2008 at 3:11 pm

Kentucky has to score on this next drive to tie it up. Going three and out is not going to cut it now.

  16. 16 Dave October 11, 2008 at 3:15 pm

1-14. Unless a miracle happens I don’t see how kentucky will win. I believe it could, but it’d have to be a spectacular drive.

  17. 17 Warren T. October 11, 2008 at 3:24 pm

    1-15, Dave.

  18. 18 Warren T. October 11, 2008 at 3:25 pm

1-1 on 4th down conversions. Thanks, Spurrier.

  19. 19 Warren T. October 11, 2008 at 3:27 pm

“Hands Of” Stoney Woodson. Should have been the ball game.

  20. 20 Warren T. October 11, 2008 at 3:28 pm

Interception. If Spurrier does anything here but take a knee….Well…

  21. 21 Warren T. October 11, 2008 at 3:31 pm

1-16. Not quite as bad as 3-33 versus Georgetown in the second half of the Final Four in Seattle…unless you are a mathmatician.

  22. 22 Dave October 11, 2008 at 3:36 pm

What do you think of their chances against Arkansas Warren? I haven’t done any research into their defense, but I imagine Hartline should be able to do better than what, 1-17? I think we can still pull out a bowl bid, but it’ll take some big game performances.

SC made the right decision to change QBs to a more dynamic and responsive one….WHY CANT UK? HArtline will cause us to continue to lose games…with as weak of an off as we have we MUST put Cobb at QB to create action

  24. 24 Dan October 11, 2008 at 4:23 pm

Why are you surprised that Spurrier won again? Kentucky’s offense needs an overhaul… bad!

  25. 25 Warren T. October 11, 2008 at 4:59 pm

Despite potentially losing our only game changing playmaker for the season (Dicky Lyons Jr.), I still like our chances against Arkansas. I haven’t studied the Hogs much either. But as anemic as all the experts paint them, our defense will certinly keep us in the game at home against the worst team in the SEC. GO BIG BLUE. If you want to really look ahead, we could still look for wins versus Arkansas, Mississippi State and yes, Vandy at home. That could still be seven wins before going into a sinking Tennessee ship for the season finale.
