How worried are you about the UK offense?

Ukhelmet5
The reports from UK’s Saturday scrimmage were not good, not as far as the offense was concerned. Five field goals. No touchdowns. Very few, if any compliments from head coach Rich Brooks, who was no happier after reviewing the performance on video.

We all knew that there would be the possibility of dropoff when you’re looking at an offense that lost Andre Woodson, Rafael Little, Keenan Burton, Steve Johnson and Jacob Tamme from last year.

But I got the feeling from Brooks yesterday that he thought the offense would be much farther along at this point of the pre-season.

Then again, perhaps the Kentucky defense is even better than we expected at this point.

Still, at this point, the question lingers: How worried are you about the UK offense?

This could be one of UK’s worst offenses in 10 years. No receivers and no quarterback to throw to them if there were. Teams will stack the line with eight and nine guys.

Lyons will see what it is like being the No. 1 guy instead of the No. 3 guy.

Joker better focus on the running game.

Poor play from the O-line can make any offense look bad, no matter how good the QB is. The good news is most of the mistakes seem to be correctable, and that UL’s D-line, while decently talented, is quite inexperienced. There is some reason for concern, but no reason to panic.

I think that they will be fine. Of course they will not be last years’ offense, but they aren’t all freshmen either. Sure, they probably will sputter a lot, but most have been backups in this strong offense for the last two years. I am not worried. Our veteran defense probably does skew the results a bit. We lost a lot in Woodyard, but most of these guys on defense are gonna be 3rd year starters. What happened on Saturday wsa pretty much what I expected. I wsa surprised that they actually got 5 field goals.

John, UK fans should be worried if the offense did not score a TD in a scrimmage against a defense who only returned 2 or 3 starters. As it is, they were held out of the end zone by a defense who returned 8 starters, several of whom will be among the very best at their position in the conference if not the nation. The offense will be fine eventually, they luckily start the season against 4 sub-par defenses where they can work out the kinks and gain confidence and experience.

Contrast that with UL, who’s defense in a scrimmage last week gave up 5 passing TD’s to an offense lead by a QB and wideout who were backups last year, coordinated by a coach (Jeff Brohm) who has never scripted or called plays in a college football game before. Now THAT is a team who’s fans should be worried, IMO.

    John,
Was the entire scrimmage first O versus first D? If the first offense cannot score against the first defense, that could be a good or a bad sign. If they cannot punch one in against anyone on the roster, that is a different matter entirely.

Alex, think it was mostly 1s vs 1s. Should be noted that Moncel Allen and Derrick Locke did not play. Both are nicked.
