E-Mailbag: Tim Couch

Received some e-mails regarding both a blog post and a column item concerning Tim Couch’s performance in his first exhibition game with the Jacksonville Jaguars last week:

Mike wrote, "I saw the replay of that game (Jax-Miami) and you probably did too. Hard to get ‘deer in the headlights’ from what I saw??? I was hoping you’d provide a little better insight than just other people’s quotes. He had two drops that were most likely medium-big gainers and he was playing with 3rd and 4th string personnel. I thought he looked average for what little time he had in, but I would like to see more – he hasn’t taken a snap in a game in a couple of years, right?"

Eric wrote, "I was just wondering about the whole Tim Couch Thing. Can you really trust the rod of a superfan (c’mon he’s devoting his time to running a fan site) especially one named Alfie Crow?"

But J.J. posted this, "Couch looked shaky out there. Lester Ricard, a rookie out of Tulane,
looked sharp. We shouldn’t see much out of Couch the next two weeks
because Leftwich and Garrard will get more PT. We probably have to wait
until Week 4 to see him again. It doesn’t look good at this point."

Meanwhile, Couch missed practice on Wednesday with a sore back, and Jags coach Jack Del Rio is dropping hints he may keep just two quarterbacks on the roster.

"There are plenty of teams around the league right now that have gone to two quarterbacks," he told the media. "We like our guys. We don’t think that’ll be the case here, but there are teams that are doing that, taking that approach, so it’s something you have to consider."

Seems doubtful the Jags would sign Couch to compete with others and then just keep two quarterbacks. My hope is Tim was just knocking the rust off this week. I agree with J.J. that he may not see that much action the next couple of weeks as the Jags polish up their starters. Jacksonville’s final exhibition game, August 30 vs. visiting Washington, may be Couch’s make-or-break.
