E-Mailbag: Barnhart

Notebook_basic_6
Sample reaction to Sunday’s column on Mitch Barnhart:

E-Mail: The best move Barnhart could ever
make would be to fire the sorry basketball coach Tubby Smith, this
guy is pathetic and has taken UK to being one of the most boring teams
in college basketball, he can’t recruit worth a darn, he has players on
his team that probably couldnt play for Eastern Kentucky. UK is on a
downward spiral that will continue as long as this jerk is the coach.
O.M.
Of course if you are like Mark Story tubby can do no wrong.

Response: Your tone is a tad harsh. Relax.

E-Mail: the article on mitch barnhart was a good one .baseball is
headed up with john cohen, and arguably  the nations top recruiter in gary
henderson.barnhart has hit the jackpot ,but hopefully he can keep these coaches
around for a long time.good times seem ahead for kentucky baseball..keep penning
those great stories ..you are as good a writer as i have seen in many
years….t.m. winchester va…..

Response: Perhaps you need to have a chat with O.M.

E-Mail: Your list is laughable, I am sure several very good
coaches would welcome the opportunity to coach UK, good try on your part to put the replacement of
Smith saying old timers, good try.

"The only thing worse than the current coach
was the one Mitch Barnhart might hire next. That was the lament shared by UK
football sympathizers." Totally uncalled for, but then what should we
expect from someone suffering from the "short" syndrome.  J., Madison, In

Response: It was suppose to be laughable.

E-Mail: Read your Sunday column on Mitch’s hires and I understand where you are
coming from but the bottom line is that sports at UK are driven by football and
men’s basketball… not baseball, women’s basketball or the other ‘so-called
minor’ sports.

Football has regressed over the past few years (and that’s saying something
considering it’s UK) and basketball hasn’t seen the best of times over the past
eight years.

It would be any AD’s ultimate nightmare having to replace two coaches in
the same year at the two major revenue producing sports. There is a chance that
nightmare will be staring Barnhart right in the face come next April. Should
that come to pass then we’ll see how good an AD he really is.

Response: I don’t think that scenario will present itself to Mitch come spring. If it did, however, I agree that would test Barnhart’s mettle and give us a true test of how he is handling the job.

E-Mail: while it is nice to see the minor sports do well 2
sports pay the bills.basketball—boring .football—–loser.they should start
with Todd and fire the whole bunch barnhart tubby and brooks.ky. teams do not
give you any reason to pay for a ticket.baseball—-who cares .barnhart better
crow about a few minor victorys because the way the way football and basketball
are headed he looks like a bad hire.i see nothing postive about uk
sports.

Response: If you see nothing positive about UK sports, you haven’t been looking.

E-Mail: I think we are seeing the beginning of what
may be another Barnhart strategic hire. I believe that Rich Brooks and staff
are turning this thing around. It may not be bowl time this year but it’s
coming. Brooks needs to be allowed to finish his contract before passing
judgement! G.

Response: I agree that unless things completely fall apart, Brooks should be allowed to finish his contract.

E-Mail: Since the basketball and football programs have been driven into the
ground by Tubby and Brooks, maybe Barnhart can replace them with
personnel that are as good at turning programs around as Skinner,
DeMoss and Cohen. At $950,000 plus a year Barnhart should do a good
job.
Have you read any columns on sports lately besides those of the
Herald-Leader, because from what I gather from other publications, not
as renown as the Herald-Leader, the football program will be in the cellar
again.

Response: Don’t think Barnhart is bringing down $950,000. Yes, I’ve read all the publications that have Brooks a goner. And he could be. In these parts, however, there does seem to be some sense of optimism, even if it may be wishful thinking.
